This is an an English translation, published in 1698,
of Israel Hibner's Mysterium Sigillorum, Herbarum and Lapidum, "The Mysteries
of Sigils, Herbs and Stones."
Here is a fascinating
Article by Anna Roos
on Mysterium Sigillorum and its background.
The book includes: the Diseases of the Planets;
Herbs, Roots and Trees of the Planets and the Invention, Knowledge and Uses of Herbs.
The most interesting section is on the sigils of the seven planets. Hibner includes
unique illustrations and instructions for constructing planetary talismans
using the visible images of the planets.

Many of the most useful books on traditional astrology
and magic are difficult to find, not surprising since they were originally published
hundreds of years ago! Some very useful 17th century books on astrology, originally
published in English have been reprinted by
Ballantrae Reprints. For
books that are out of print the Advanced Book
Exchange has the on-line inventories of thousands of independent booksellers.
Finally for books that are in print I have provided
direct links to
Amazon.com.
These books are indicated by being in purple font with

The English Civil War brought a breakdown in
government censorship as well as coinciding with the most prolific period of
English astrology. In addition, many texts were written in English, rather
than Latin, making them accessible to modern readers.
William Lilly, Christian Astrology [1647]
A key text for traditional horary astrology. Excellent reference for all types
of traditional astrology, though only horary and natal are covered explicitly.
Several versions are available:
Regulus 1986 facsimile version, out of print. Possibly
available through ABE,
William Ramesey, Astrologia Restaurata
or Astrology Restored [1653] Best source for traditional electional astrology,
also has useful mundane astrology material. Available from
Ballantrae Reprints
under the title "Introduction to the Judgement of the Stars".
Henry Coley, Key to the Whole Art of Astrology
[1676] Covers natal, horary and electional.
William Salmon, Soul of Astrology [1679]
quirky, but interesting.
Anthony Griffin, Astrological Judgment Touching Theft
[1665] Detailed treatment of theft horaries.
Richard Saunders, Astrological Judgment and
Practice of Physick [1677] Medical astrology.
Nicholas Culpepper,
Astrological Judgment of Diseases [1655] Medical astrology.
Joseph Blagrave, Astrological Practice of Physick
[1671] Medical astrology, interesting information on curing bewitchment.
Richard Ball, Astro-Physical Compendium
[1697] Horary astrology.
Olivia Barclay,
Horary Astrology Rediscovered
(Schiffer, 1990) Useful introduction. Barclay played major role in revival
of traditional horary astrology.
Lee Lehman,
Essential Dignities, (Schiffer, 1989) Interesting series of essays
on traditional astrology.
Lee Lehman,
The Book of Rulerships (Schiffer, 1992)
Very useful listing of traditional planetary and sign rulerships.
Make sure and check the original source, however.
While centuries old by the Renaissance the rediscovery
of these texts had a significant impact on Renaissance astrology and magic:
The Corpus Hermeticum.
A key text for Renaissance astrology, magic and occult philosophy.
First translated into Latin by Marsilio Ficino for his Medici patrons.
Iamblichus, The Egyptian Mysteries. This
text discusses Greek Theurgia or divine magic. Also quite influential in the
Renaissance. The excellent 18th century translation by Thomas Taylor, entitled
Iamblichus on the Mysteries of the Egyptians, Chaldeans, and Assyrians
is unfortunately out of print.
A large number of translations of classical astrology texts,
including Vettius Valens and Hephaistio of Thebes,
are available from Robert Schmidt at the successor
Hindsight Project.
Dorotheus of Sidon, Carmen Astrologicum,
translated by David Pingree. Very useful classical astrology text covering
natal, horary and electional astrology. Available from
Spica Publications.
Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos.
A key influence on later, particulary, Renaissance astrology.
This area is dominated by medieval astrologer
Guido Bonatti and contemporary practitioner of medieval astrology, Robert Zoller.
The following are available from
Zoller's website:
Guido Bonatti, The Astrologers's Guide, translated by Henry Coley [1675]
These are 146 aphorisms from Bonatti's Liber Astronomiae, Book Five.
Excellent resource for horary, electional and natal astrology.
Guido Bonatti, On the Arabic Parts, translated by Robert Zoller.
Section on Arabic Parts from Bonatti's Liber Astronomiae.
Guido Bonatti, On War, translated by Robert Zoller.
Section on horary and electional astrology for war from Bonatti's Liber Astronomiae.
The Picatrix. This is a very important Arabic
text on astrological magic, extremely influential in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
Here is more information from the Renaissance Astrology web site
on Picatrix. Here are two of the more accessible versions:
The Latin Picatrix translated by David Pingree from Arabic into Latin,
available from
Warburg Institute.
A new English translation from Arabic of books 1 & 2 of Picatrix
is available from Ouroboros Press .
