Introduction to Mass Magic

TOP

One of the myths of the modern age is that magic, which is seen as irrational superstition, has been conquered by science, when in fact our society is permeated by magic. Professor Ioan Coulianu, in his Eros and Magic in the Renaissance notes that magicians have not disappeared in the modern world, "...they have simply been camouflaged in sober and legal guises... Nowadays the magician busies himself with public relations, propaganda, market research, sociological surveys, publicity, information, counterinformation and misinformation, censorship, espionage and even cryptography..." Eros and Magic in the Renaissance, page 104.
Despite the importance of mass media and its allied fields, their current omnipresence and technical and empirical sophistication, no cogent theoretical basis exists for understanding why and how they operate. Renaissance philosophy and magic, particularly that of Giordano Bruno, provides a philosophical framework, capable of practical application. My article Spoonful of Sugar provides a useful introduction to the interaction of Renaissance magic and modern mass media.
Students of the Mass Magic Course will learn the theory and philosophy of Giordano Bruno's magical bonding as well as its practical application, allowing them to use the insights gained through their study in understanding and using the magic of modern mass media.

Required & Recommended Texts

TOP

The required texts for the Mass Magic Course are Ioan Coulianu's Eros and Magic in the Renaissance, Kirk Packwood's Memetic Magic, as well as Cause, Principle and Unity which contains Giordano Bruno's essays on magic and bonding.
Recommended texts include Gustav LeBon's The Crowd, a landmark work of crowd psychology, Mark & Pearson's The Hero & The Outlaw, which explicitly uses archetypal psychology for advertising, Robert Greene's The 48 Laws of Power & The Art of Seduction, which give practical rules and examples of the use of seduction and power and Michael Hoffman's Secret Societies and Psychological Warfare, extreme, but with some useful content.
