Thabit Ibn Qurra's De Imaginibus Astrological Magic

TOP

De Imaginibus, "On Images" is, after Picatrix, the most important text for medieval and Renaissance astrological magic. De Imaginibus is accepted as the work of the Harranian Sabian sage Thabit Ibn Qurra. Written in the 9th century A.D. and the product of the Neoplatonic and Hermetic wisdom of the Harranian Sabians, the book was a key source for the Picatrix as well as being consulted by Albertus Magnus, Marsilio Ficino and Cornelius Agrippa.
De Imaginibus represents the height of astrological magic technique and goes far beyond merely planetary talismans in using the full range of traditional astrological technique developed by the sophisticated Harranian Sabians. De Imaginibus explains how to create house based talismans, how to use horary questions to forecast and anchor talismans and how to tune talismans to individual natal charts.
De Imaginibus is divided in the the following nine chapters:
  1. On the Expulsion of Scorpions and Other Pests
  2. Example of the Destruction of a City
  3. Images for Receiving Wealth from Another
  4. Images for Profit from your own Efforts
  5. Third Part with Regard to Rulership and Authority
  6. Conversion of the King to Affection or Displaying Fellowship
  7. Fourth Part: Images for Concord and Separation and Love Between Two People
  8. Summary
  9. The Form in Which the Image is Cast

Title Page
Renaissance Astrology is proud to present the first English translation of Thabit Ibn Qurra's De Imaginibus, "On Images". This translation was made from the British Library's Royal CXVIII manuscript of De Imaginibus and includes an introduction to this key text of astrological magic and to the Harranian Sabians, of whom Thabit Ibn Qurra was perhaps the most distinguished philosopher, translator, scientist and master of the occult arts of astrology and magic.
The Renaissance Astrology edition contains a complete translation, the shorter paraphrase contained in Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy plus a commentary by the translator, Christopher Warnock, a leading contemporary practitioner of traditional astrological magic. This edition also contains beautiful illustrations by the artist and contemporary mage Nigel Jackson.
The commentary explains not only the practical application of the teachings of De Imaginibus on the preparation of talismans, but also the deeper philosophical and spiritual significance of the work, which truly is an important guide to Hermeticism as a Practical Path to Gnosis, the mystic union with the Divine.

Joseph Blagrave's Introduction to Astrology was first published in 1682. It is an excellent introduction to the basics of traditional astrology and has a useful and complete section on horary astrology.
Its most important feature, however, is a fascinating section on electional astrology with much new and exciting material. Blagrave explains, for example, how to fit the chart to a particular person, in order to properly elect an auspicious time to assist or influence them.
Blagrave also deals with the rectification of natal charts using primary directions and with solar revolutions and transits.

Jubar Astrologicum
William Thrasher’s Jubar Astrologicum, published in 1671, provides a complete introduction to the basics of traditional astrology, explaining the essential dignity system, aspects, the assignment of houses and other key facets common to all types of traditional astrology.
In addition, however, Jubar Astrologicum also gives complete instructions for answering horary questions for each of the twelve houses, including questions of wealth, property, birth, illness, marriage, partnership, death, travel, career and even witchcraft and curses.
One of the most useful features of Jubar Astrologicum is Thrasher’s delineation of numerous example charts, providing invaluable practical insight to horary analysis.
Renaissance Astrology Facsimile Editions is pleased to present Jubar Astrologicum in its first publication in three hundred years. Like all 17th century authors on horary astrology Thrasher is clearly indebted to William Lilly, but Jubar Astrologicum contains much of interest for students of traditional astrology.

TOP

Mikropanastron
New
John Partridge's Mikropanastron, published in 1679, gives an excellent introduction to the basics of traditional astrology, explaining the essential dignities, aspects, houses and quickly jumping into horary, telling, "How to judge all manner of Questions"
Partridge then passes onto natal astrology, packing in detailed information on all areas of the birth chart, including length of life, temperament, complexion, manners, wit, stature, wealth, childbirth, illness, marriage, journeys, religion, honor and dignity, friends and imprisonment. Partridge also gives useful instruction on directions in the natal chart and a catalog of fixed stars.
Partridge gives a particularly useful look at elections, carefully distinguishing between those elections that need to take into consideration the natal chart of the user and those that can be profitably made without a natal chart/ Very interesting!
Perhaps my favorite part of Mikropanastron is Partridge's extensive listing of aphorisms, short explanatory sayings, that were a favorite of our illustrious predecessors. He includes his own aphorisms for elections, Gadbury's natal aphorisms, plus 100 aphorisms of Hermes, 100 aphorisms of Bethem, an extra hundred aphorisms plus the famous Centiloquium attributed to Ptolemy!

John Middleton's Practical Astrology Horary & Electional Astrology

TOP

Practical Astrology
John Middleton’s Practical Astrology, published in 1678, is another example of the unparalleled outpouring of traditional astrological knowledge in 17th century England. Not until the 21st century has there been so much interest and enthusiasm for the precise predictions possible with traditional astrology.
Middleton provides a complete explanation of traditional horary technique in all its varied permutations. While traditional horary astrologers will always rely on Lilly's Christian Astrology Middleton adds important details and nuances, particularly in the example charts. These practical demonstrations of horary skill by the 17th century masters are invaluable for our modern practice as only by honing our technique with actual examples can we hope to approach the amazing predictive power of our predecessors.
As a bonus Practical Astrology also contains a list of rules for elections, explaining how to pick auspicious times for many activities including voyages, receiving money, short trips, buying or selling houses, finding buried treasure, gambling, marriage, long trips and friendship.

Johnannes Angelus Astrological Optics Natal Astrology & Astrological Magic

TOP

Astrological Optics
New
Johannes Angelus' Astrological Optics, published in 1655, is a fascinating look at traditional natal astrology. What is most interesting about it is the listing of images for each of the 360 degrees of the Zodiac. In the 9th degree of Libra, for example, the image is a man holding a sword over his head in his right hand. "It signifies a litigious person." Astrological Optics at 33. By comparing the degree rising in a natal chart we can get useful information about the person and their character. However, this 360 degree listing has an even more enthralling use, as the basis for personalized talismans. By using these degree images we can personalize and focus a talisman to a very degree of a person's natal chart. Fantastic!
Astrological Optics also provides a complete description of the meaning of each of the 7 planets in the 12 houses and the 12 signs, plus the aspects of each planet with Mercury and the meaning of the Ascendant in each of the 12 signs. But don't take my word for it Astrological Optics comes highly recommended by the master astrologer, William Lilly!

Kyranides / Cyranides Hermetic & Talismanic Magic

TOP

Astrological Optics
New
The book of natural and talismanic magic known as the Kyranides or Cyranides, is one of the most important works of technical Hermetica, the practical magical, astrological and alchemical works attributed to the sage Hermes Trismegistus.
The Kyranides is a compilation of several earlier works, notably the treatise of Harpocration, that deal with the occult and magical properties of birds, animals, plants and stones. The Kyranides is truly an ancient text, dating to between the 2nd and 4th centuries A.D. The eminent scholar of Hermeticism, Garth Fowden, describes the Kyranides as the most important source for the Hermetic doctrine of the occult virtues and powers.
Kyranides is divided into four books, loosely organized by the letters of the Greek alphabet. Each chapter contains the magical and occult properties of animals, birds, plants and stones beginning with that letter, plus the first book includes instructions for talismans using the appropriate plants, animals and stones. This translation of the Cyranides was made in 1685 and is the only complete translation available in English of this key Hermetic text.

English Translation of Picatrix Book I & II

Picatrix Books 1 & 2
Renaissance is pleased to present John Michael Greer's and Christopher Warnock English translation of books I & II of the Latin Picatrix in paperback and hardcover. Both Greer and Warnock are experienced ceremonial magicians and Warnock is a leading astrological magician. Picatrix explains how to make hundreds of different talismans. This is the source that all of the Renaissance mages used for their astrological talismans, Mansions of the Moon, planetary talismans, house based talismans, multiple sets of decan talismans, it's all there!
But Picatrix goes beyond what you would expect from a grimoire, it's just not sets of practical recipes, though lord knows there is lots and lots of practical info. Picatrix explains Hermetic and Neo-platonic philosophy and how talismans work, logically and coherently. This is also why this book was prized by the highest of high mages. As John likes to say, Picatrix truly represents the rocket science of the day. Astrological magic is complex, but this complexity gives it such great scope and great power. Picatrix puts it all right in front of you! Finally the secrets of astrological magic are revealed!
And now, finally, Books I & II of the full four books of Picatrix, are laid out clearly and cogently for you in English based on the Latin critical edition edited by David Pingree. Pingree didn't just use one manuscript, he used over 20, going line by line through every one and comparing all of these manuscripts word by word. The critical edition is longer and has much more material than any one manuscript.
Now, you, too can have a copy of the English translation of the Latin Picatrix books I & II! At this point we can only release a small number of pre-publication review copies to individual readers. We are looking for feedback on the clarity of the translation, what additional information, appendices and footnotes would be useful. Readers, by purchasing a review copy, can greatly assist us in making the final edition of the complete four books of Picatrix of the highest quality. We expect to release the complete Picatrix in 2010. Multiple copies cannot be provided, no wholesale copies are available, no copies will be sold through bookstores nor online through sources like Amazon.
The English translation of the Latin critical edition of the Picatrix is available in perfect bound paperback or hardcover, 6 x 9 inches, 141 pages with glossary and bibliography. The cost of the paperback is $54.95 with $9.95 US shipping and $12.95 non-US shipping. You can order the Paperback here The cost of the hardcover is $74.95. US shipping is $10.95. 17th Century English Astrology for Practitioners

TOP

The English Civil War brought a breakdown in government censorship as well as coinciding with the most prolific period of English astrology. In addition, many texts were written in English, rather than Latin, making them accessible to modern readers.
William Lilly, Christian Astrology [1st ed. 1647] A key text for traditional horary astrology. Excellent reference for all types of traditional astrology, though only horary and natal are covered explicitly. Both the first and the rare 1659 second editions of this most valuable text are available on the Renaissance Astrology CD Library.
Here are just a few of the 85 17th century astrology texts on the Renaissance Astrology CD Library:

Anonymous, [J.B], Sacred & Divine Science of Astrology, astrological philosophy
Childrey, Joshua, Indago Astrologica, astrological history and philosophy
Coley, Henry, Key to the Whole Art of Astrology, a huge compendium of horary, electional and natal astrology.
Dariot, Claude, Judgement of the Stars, key horary text, source for Lilly's medical astrology.
Gadbury, John, Doctrine of Nativities & Horary Questions, excellent account of natal astrology, also useful horary information.
Holwell, John, Astrology of the Ottoman Empire, fascinating study of the mundane astrology of the Ottoman Empire.
Lilly, William, Supernatural Sights, oddball astrological prophezing by the Master!
Maplet, John, The Dial of Destiny, interesting planetary rulership information.
Partridge, John, Mikropanastron, standard horary text.
Ramesey, William, Astrology Restored, definitive text on electional, also key mundane text.

Classical Texts on Astrology & Magic

TOP

While centuries old by the Renaissance the rediscovery of these texts had a significant impact on Renaissance astrology and magic:

The Corpus Hermeticum. A key text for Renaissance astrology, magic and occult philosophy. First translated into Latin by Marsilio Ficino for his Medici patrons.
Iamblichus, The Egyptian Mysteries. This text discusses Greek Theurgia or divine magic. Also quite influential in the Renaissance. The excellent 18th century translation by Thomas Taylor, entitled Iamblichus on the Mysteries of the Egyptians, Chaldeans, and Assyrians is unfortunately out of print.

A large number of translations of classical astrology texts, including Vettius Valens and Hephaistio of Thebes, are available from Robert Schmidt at the successor Hindsight Project.

Dorotheus of Sidon, Carmen Astrologicum, translated by David Pingree. Very useful classical astrology text covering natal, horary and electional astrology. Available from Spica Publications.

Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos. A key influence on later, particulary, Renaissance astrology.

Medieval Texts

This area is dominated by medieval astrologer Guido Bonatti and contemporary practitioner of medieval astrology, Robert Zoller. The following are available from Zoller's website:
  • Guido Bonatti, The Astrologers's Guide, translated by Henry Coley [1675] These are 146 aphorisms from Bonatti's Liber Astronomiae, Book Five. Excellent resource for horary, electional and natal astrology.

  • Guido Bonatti, On the Arabic Parts, translated by Robert Zoller. Section on Arabic Parts from Bonatti's Liber Astronomiae.

  • Guido Bonatti, On War, translated by Robert Zoller. Section on horary and electional astrology for war from Bonatti's Liber Astronomiae.

The Picatrix. This is a very important Arabic text on astrological magic, extremely influential in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Here is more information from the Renaissance Astrology web site on Picatrix. Here are two of the more accessible versions:

Marsilio Ficino & Cornelius Agrippa

A key figure for the study of the Renaissance in general and astrological magic in particular is Marsilio Ficino.
  • His De triplici vita, Three Books on Life , translated by Kaske and Clarke is a "must have" text for anyone interested in astrological magic.

  • The Charles Boer translation entitled The Book of Life is a poor substitute for Kaske & Clarke.

Also in print are several volumes of Ficino's Platonic Theology
Another important figure in Renaissance astrological magic is Cornelius Agrippa. We are fortunate to have available:
