Asking Horary Questions

Inner Circle Marginalia
I had a student working on their horary masterpiece in my Horary Astrology Course. For the masterpiece you need to have an actual question and it is best to have a real querent, though possible to use your own question. This querent had a daughter who was applying for several jobs and wanted to know which job the daughter would get. My student had them pick one job and ask about it. The student judged that the querent's daughter would not get the job, but they did get it, while they didn't get another job applied for. They asked me about the chart and the situation.
FFirst, I told my student since I know the outcome I cannot reasonably judge the chart, but I it's not a clear yes or no, there are certainly some positive factors in the chart. I can't say how I would have judged it. This is a very important insight I think and requires a certain humility. I think it would be very tempting to point out all the factors that lead to the already know result and be confident that we would have judged the chart this way. But that simply isn't true. There is nothing more nerve wracking than sitting with the chart for a querent who is paying for the reading and expects an accurate result, when you don't know the answer. It's so easy to forget that hindsight is always 20/20, particularly when so much "astrological prediction" consists of looking at charts where the outcome is already known. Now if the chart is very obviously positive or negative then you can have more confidence about how you would have judged it, but you can't ever be sure.
The next issue has to do with assisting querents in formulating horary questions. The situation with this querent and their multiple questions actually occurs frequently. What is happening is that the client (and this is not their fault) is seeking guidance before the situation has really jelled. In order to get an accurate horary we need to have the querent ask a yes or no question without multiple possible answers. But there is also a more subtle requirement which is that the focused yes or no question needs to be the querent's real question for the highest accuracy.
It is not at all unusual for a querent to want to know "Should I do x or y?" Splitting the question in two and asking separately is indeed how I have handled these situations. But the problem is that the querent still has not focused on x or y as their final choice and thus the situation is still somewhat muddy. Really the querent is not so much concerned about a particular job, though they would like to know which one their daughter would get, but more concerned overall about their daughter getting any job. In addition, we are dealing with a turned chart, so while parents are quite emotional involved with their children it doesn't have the same punch as asking about yourself.
This in in addition to not having really sorted through the options or come up with the next step. Some clients would like horary to do the heavy lifting in their decision making process. It would be nice to be able to ask "What should I do with the rest of my life?" and get as a response "At 3:05 pm on January 3, 2019 go to 443 S Main St and ask for Bill" Horary cannot do this. Querents often get ahead of themselves. It is not unusual for querent in the middle of a messy breakup to start asking about new relationships. First things first, is not only a watchword for practical decision making, but very useful for formulating horary questions.
What horary forces the querent to do, if an accurate answer is sought, is to really work through all the alternatives and settle on their final choice. Horary then is best used to confirm or deny that final choice. My sense is that to get an accurate horary the querent needs to commit seriously to a particular future, and doing manifests a serious potential reality which can be seen in the horary chart and then tested against the deeper spiritual patternings of the likely future as manifested in the Heavenly cycles. I've bolded this because this is the view that I have come to after 20 years and 4000+ actual horary readings for clients. I'm not saying it is "right" for all astrologers or querents, just that that it appears to be a useful perspective for formulating and assisting querents to formulate questions.
Hindsight pops up again with querents. Of course they would like to know exactly what is going to happen and when, or perhaps more accurately they would like to know how to make things come out exactly as they wish. But some would settle for total omiscience, if omnipotence is not available. Since the past set, clear and obvious (is it?) then any fortuneteller worth their salt ought to be able to be 100% accurate all the time. This also pulls astrologers, as noted, to "predict" in hindsight, once again affording total accuracy.
But even the most accurate chart and the best astrologer can't see everything or predict 100%. There's also the fact that horary can be wrong at times or the weakest link, the astrologer misjudges the chart. Nevertheless, the amazing accuracy that horary does often exhibit makes it useful to consult an astrologer and amazing as a practice. Traditional horary is very much worth learning!
