Fixed Star Door & Altar

TOP

I had a request to explain my fixed star door, plus I realized that I didn't have a current picture of my fixed star altar, so I decided that it was time to do a little show and tell! You can see my fixed star door above. Running down each side, interspersed with round and diamond shaped mirrors, the fixed star door has the sigils of the 15 fixed stars from Hermes on the 15 Fixed Stars from Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy Book II, chapter 52.

Sirius Sigil Red
The sigils alternate black on one side and red on the other. There are many variations on these sigils, but these are the ones that are more commonly used, plus I prefer them because they are more regular and harmonious.

Fixed Door Top - Planetary Sigils

At the top of the door, also interspersed with mirrors, are the sigils of the planets from Picatrix in the Chaldean Order.

Door Middle - Place World Tarot

In the center of the door is the World Tarot card from Robert Place with a woman wearing the winged sandals and carrying the caduceus of Hermes/Mercury on a heart surrounded by the Ouroboros and the four elements of air, earth, fire and water.

Fixed Star Altar

Next to the fixed star door is the fixed star altar. You can see banners of Spica on the left and the Pleaides on the right. There are fixed star images interspersed with mirrors between the banners. Beneath the fixed star images are large, medium and small mirrors of the fixed stars. In front of the mirrors are fixed star talismans, plus candles and other ritual implements. This is the altar I use for fixed star ritual. My practice, for individual invocations, other than my Daily Planetary Practice [use your username and password to access this page] is to start with a fresh candle and then, when I am in the room (!!!) I let the candle burn down.
This more devotional practice, therefore, does not exclude talismans. They are the visible manifestation points for the celestial spirits. But in addition, as a celestial priest, I find it essential to have at least one and in my case, many altars so that I can honor and venerate the celestial spirits. My personal preference is for lots of clarity and light. I have lots of mirrors and use clear glass votive candle holders and white candles for all my ritual. Using white candles is definitely a matter of personal preference, but also practicality since I typically have 8-12 different candles burning at once for various spirits and angels. There are lots and lots of possible variations you can use on your own altar or altars!

So let's talk a little bit about this talisman. They have Nigel Jackson's beautiful Saturn image from Agrippa and Picatrix of the stag headed Saturn riding a dragon. Very intense, very evocative image! Saturn, of course, is the planet par excellence of the deepest, most hidden wisdom and co-rules with Mercury all of the esoteric arts, including astrology, alchemy and magic. Saturn is also known for giving long life and if he is pleased with you, removing obstacles and granting power and riches.
One issue I should address is that these talismans are dignified by term and face, for a total of +3. It's easy to fall into the mistake of thinking that the higher the essential dignity score, the better and that +6 is twice as good or twice as powerful as +3. If we were dealing with batteries and their voltage that might be true. But astrological talismans are a point of contact with the celestial spirits. +3 is strong enough to have a good connection, like calling on your cellphone. Now we have some +8 Saturn Libra talismans, these are great and it is nice to have Saturn talismans so powerful. They are like using, not just a T1, but a T3 line! Certainly if you can afford one, it would be cool to have one. But these +3 Saturn talismans will also get you that good connection to Saturn and are much more affordable. I hate to have people say, "I have to have the most expensive talisman, but I can't afford it, so I won't get anything at all" Plus you may prefer to have this gorgeous dragon image from Picatrix over the Arabic design of the Saturn Libra talismans.
