Instead, I find myself increasingly drawn to the views of the Plotinus, the 3rd century Neo-platonic philosopher. In his Ennead II, treatise 3, "On Whether the Stars are Causes", Plotinus denies that the stars are the causes of events, but affirms the efficacy of astrology for prediction, "But if these planets give signs of things to come-as we maintain that many other things do-what might the cause be?" Ennead II, 3, trans. Armstrong (Loeb, 1966) p. 69.
Plotinus argues that because of the spiritual sympathy and interconnection of the Cosmos that the stars, and other forms of divination, can predict the future,
There would be no signifying if particular things did not happen according to some order. Let us suppose that the stars are like characters always being written on the heavens or written once for all and moving as they perform their task, a different one: and let us assume that their significance results from this, just as because of the one principle in a single living being, by studying one member we can learn something about a different one. For instance we can come to conclusions about someone's character and also about the dangers that beset him and the precautions to be taken by looking at his eyes or some other part of his body. Yes they are members and so are we; so we can learn about one from the other. All things are full of signs, and it is a wise man who can learn about one thing from another...Then what is this single linked order? If there is one, our auguries from birds and other living creatures, by which we predict particular events are reasonable. All thing must be joined to one another; not only must there be in each individual part what is called a single united breath of life, but before them all and still more, in the All. One principle must make the universe a single complex living creature...

So clearly, astrology is the practical application of the spiritual interconnection of all things in the unity of the Cosmos, but are there further applications of astrology in spiritual practice? The 3rd-4th century Neo-platonic philosopher Iamblichos certainly believed so. Iamblichos was a proponent and practitioner of theurgy, literally "god work" that sought spiritual union with the One through ritual. Iamblichos says that the celestial gods/souls mediate between individual souls and the Soul of the World, the Anima Mundi,
If the soul is universal and does not belong to any particular species, it appears as a formless fire revealing - through the whole world - the total one, indivisable, and formless Soul of the World. But a purified soul [i.e. like the stars] exhibits a fiery form and a pure unmingled fire, its inner light and form appear to be pure and stable, and it follows in the company of its anagogic Leader, rejoicing in his good will while revealing its own rank through its activities. But the soul which verges downward drags with it the signs of bonds and punishments, is weighed down with the conflicts of material spirits, is possessed by irregular troubles of matter and appears to have placed before itself the authority of generative Daimons.

So what are we to make of this passage, filled with complex and confusing concepts? What I take from it is that the potentiality exists to extend our understanding of astrological magic as a means to fulfill material goals to celestial ritual and to the veneration of the celestial spirits for spiritual advancement. We can indeed treat a talisman like a battery, needing a new boyfriend, one could buy a Venus talisman and discard it once the boyfriend appears or if our particular goal is not satisfied. But Venus is a focal point not just for erotic love, but for philae, brotherly love, and agape, universal love. Every time we invoke a planet, star, etc., we are opening up communication with these purified souls and being in their presence and in communion with them fills us with their gifts and positive attributes.
So by shifting our emphasis from external change, trying to get the celestial spirits to rearrange the material world to meet our desires, to internal change, we are moving to a true spiritual path that includes astrology.
