Completing the Horary Circuit

Inner Circle Marginalia
I had an interesting e-mail today about horary questions. The person said that a friend had come for a natal reading and asked a question. The astrologer then asked me, could they take the question as a horary. My response was that the optimal situation would be where the querent asked the question knowingly as a horary question. But why is this optimal?
Horary is quite strange and bizarre in many ways, particularly compared to modern natal, but even to traditional natal. We don't range all over the chart in horary, some houses are irrelevant, while in natal every house is significant. A key difference that begins our discussion today, is that the natal chart is the time of birth and a horary is the chart of a question. Natal seems so obvious, so self evidently a significant point, while a question seems so ephemeral. Birth as the sole important point is itself debatable, as traditional atrologers also would like to look at the chart of conception, though in practice this is very hard to pin down even with the Trutine of Hermes, see Christian Astrology pages 502-5. This is super complex, by the way and I have no idea how to do the calculations!
But anyhow birth time seems so reasonable until we look more carefully at it. Why should the time of birth foretell so much about the subsequent life of the native? Modern causality would attribute it to some sort of beams or something coming out from the planets and zapping or imprinting or something at birth. But, of course, there is zero scientific evidence of any energetic beams or fields or any other material cause. In fact, the causality is purely spiritual, as the nature of the time of the beginning of anything reflects the pattern in which the thing will unfold. This is just as true of a question as of a physical birth. "What is above is like what is below and what is below is like what is above, to accomplish the miracle of unity." The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus.
Nevertheless, on a practical level, getting the correct time for a horary question is a bit less obvious than the time of birth. Guido Bonatti says in his First Consideration,

The 1st, is to observe what it is that moves a person to propose or ask a question of an Astrologer; where we must take notice of three motions: the First, of the [soul], when a man is stirred up in his thoughts and bath an intent to enquire; a Second, of the superiour and celestial bodies; so that they at that time imprint on the thing enquired after, what shall become of it; the Third, of the free will which disposes him to the very act of enquiring; for although the mind be moved to enquire, 'tis not enough unless the superiour bodies sympathize therewith; nor is such motion of the stars enough, unless by the election of his will the person does actually enquire.

Book of Astronomy, Tr V, 146 Considerations.
So Bonatti speaks of three factors combining for a horary question, (1) the celestial cycles; (2) the soul, though we would probably say in modern terms, the emotions; and (3) the will, that is the willingness to ask the question and also to receive the answer. But there is an additional factor, as Bonatti notes, optimally the querent should in addition, ask this question of an astrologer. Book of Astronomy, Tr. VI, chapter 4, Dykes trans, page 372. This accords with my experience in judging over 4,000 horary questions for clients over two decades. The best horary questions are ones that the querent cares deeply about. The more visceral, the more emotional the question, the more closely the chart corresponds to situation. This accords with the medieval and Renaissance view that the planets controlled the emotions, or more precisely that the cycles of the planets correspond to inner emotional cycles.
In practical terms this is very helpful, because we as horary astrologers, can advise our clients to ask a horary question when they are emotionally moved, when they can feel that they really wish to know the answer to the question. It also explains the fallacy of trying to astrologically elect the time of asking a horary or refusing to ask a horary with void of course Moon or Mercury retrograde. Here rather than follow our emotions, we end up stacking the deck. The querent mistakenly thinks they can force the desired outcome, when all they are really doing is forcing the desired answer which does not correspond to the actual outcome.
So the asking the question of the astrologer completes the horary circuit so to speak. Asking the question of the astrologer makes it a horary question, it is the final act of will that completes the process. This is also why as Lilly says, "Without doubt the true hour of receiving any Question is then, when the Querent propounds his desire to the Astrologer, even that very moment of time is to be accepted." Christian Astrology, page 166. This is hard for some querents to accept, "But this is MY question, why aren't you using MY location and time?" In fact, it is not the querent's question, the correspondence of their soul/emotions, the chart of the Heavens and the situation they are asking about are all a reflection of the overall harmony of the Cosmos. One amusing note is that I only get this objection from querents that got a negative answer and want a do-over. When I ask querents beforehand if I should use the suggested received time or the asked time, so far 100% have accepted my recommendation of the received time!
So we have reached a point where we can answer the query about whether asking a question, but not asking it as a horary, results in a valid horary chart. My sense is that it is a lot like an asked chart. You can use these, in fact, I do judge my own asked charts, but they are not optimal or of the maximum accuracy because they do not contain all of the elements of a complete question. The emotions are there, but some of the intention is lacking, so the correspondence to the Heavens may not be complete.

Arabic Saturn Table Talisman
I am very pleased to present new Saturn talismans, this time the Arabic Saturn Table Talisman pictured, plus Saturn Dragon Latin Back Talismans and Saturn Dragon Arabic Back Talismans.
We had been down to just one Saturn talisman and these new ones are more powerful (+5) and cheaper and we have them in three different versions! All right! And boy, I really love the incredibly beautiful, complex and powerful traditional Arabic magical squares design that Muhammed did for these. AMAZING!
We don't have a lot of the Arabic Saturn Table talismans and they are bigger so they are a bit more expensive. But we are finally in stock again with powerful Saturn talismans. He is par excellence the ruler of the most hidden wisdom, of the most occult knowledge. He rewards his solitary votaries with mastery of the esoteric arts, along, of course, with their co-ruler Mercury.
Inner Circle members, so long as your Saturn is not in Aries, Leo or Cancer, or otherwise combust or retrograde without dignity, should be thinking about working with Saturn. With my Saturn rising in Aquarius, Saturn and I go WAY back! Check out the Arabic Saturn Table Talisman pictured, plus Saturn Dragon Latin Back Talismans and Saturn Dragon Arabic Back Talismans.
