Fictional "magic" has some very attractive qualities. It is often extremely easy, all you have to do is rub the magic lamp and you get three wishes. Like much "magic" these wishes are unlimited, so that with a tiny amount of effort or knowledge you get a tremendous effect. In fact wish fulfillment is a good way to characterize what the average person thinks of "magic" This translates into the expectation that you can buy a $5 trinket "talisman" on Ebay and that you will immediately win $1 million in the lottery. No study and no work should be necessary and you should be able to get exactly the effects you desire instantly. This to many, is "magic" The problem is that real magic isn't "magic".
Why not? Real magic is simply working with the spiritual realm, whether or not you see this as impersonal spiritual energy or interacting with spiritual beings. This includes ritual, consecration and prayer, so that the line between religion and magic seems very blurry to me. If we are able to do magic, that is, able to work with the spiritual realm, then that means the spiritual realm is part of reality. That in itself is quite a stretch for the prevalent modern view, atheistic-materialism, which posits that nothing exists except matter and energy and these are the same, E = mc2.
But if magic exists then it cannot be instant, easy and all powerful. This is because the reality we are currently experiencing is one of limitation and separateness. This is most definitely true in the material world, where things appear to be material and thus limited to a particular location, both in time and space, with certain limited qualities. Every apparently separate thing in the material world comes into existence, exists for a time and appears to disappear. This also appears to be true in the Alam al-mithal, the intermediate world of images, that we can contact most readily in dreams. There things exist as forms, without substantiality, but still individual and thus limited, still appearing, existing and disappearing. Even in the Divine World of the Platonic Ideas and Archangels, where everything exists eternally in its essence, without materiality and likely without form, still separateness and individuality exits. Justice is not Love is not Triangle. Raphael is not Gabriel is not Metatron. Even at this most exalted level, separateness means limitation.
So "There's no such thing as a free lunch" applies in the spiritual as well as material realms. If reality is changed or warped, an "energy" input must be made. In the Hindu tradition one can gain siddhis, ie spiritual powers, through asceticism like fasting or long and difficult meditation. Evil magic can seem like a shortcut, promising instant results and great power, but malefic spiritual work will exact a serious price.
In magic like anything else, the more experienced one is, the better one's results tend to be. One can also learn how to best apply one's energies. In a recent newsletter Jason Miller brought up a very useful point along these lines. He talked about doing magic awhile ago for a specific sum of money and getting it as insurance money when he got into an accident. Now, he said, when he does money magic, the money comes through his business. Again, the difference between wish fulfillment and real magic. Real magic needs a way to manifest in your life. I have a business so I really notice a 5% or 10% increase due to magic. How does the magic manifest if you've got a job with a set salary? With "magic" it's the "magic"'s job to worry about this, with real magic you need to make sure there is a way for the magic to manifest.
This manifestation issue comes up in other areas. For example, magic is spiritual so it is harder for it to affect material objects. Unlike Harry Potter or Dr. Strange, magic generally isn't simply another form of material technology or electro-magnetic energy. Algol, definitely one of our most powerful celestial spirits, manifests most obviously as electrical or electronic interference, since this is closer to the spiritual realm and thus easier for the spirit to influence. Thus like anything else, knowledge, experience and effort make a huge difference.
It is paradoxical that while separation brings limitation, that if one realizes one's true nature as the One, then despite the potential power to change everything, there arises no desire to change anything, as the utter perfection of the imperfection of reality is also realized. Perfect and complete acceptance is the true magic.
