#4 - March 2017 - Know Thyself!
Know Thyself! Featured Reading: NEW! The Mage's Reading Featured Talisman: Saturn Dragon Know Thyself!
So let's take it first at a level we can relate to as mages, magical workers and esoteric students. Firstly, who are we? What are our strengths, our weaknesses, our drives, our fears? Can we look at ourselves calmly and dispassionately? This is extremely useful from a practical standpoint. For example, I can see that I am not a freestanding psychic, I cannot pick up "vibrations" or predict clearly without any external support. I need astrology or geomancy or I ching as a foundation, then I am able to do accurate prediction. I realize that I am more of a celestial priest than a ceremonial magician. I can see that I am not suited to being an employee and that I need to be self employed. All of these insights are highly useful. I can emphasize my strengths or I can choose to work on my weaknesses. I would highly recommend that all mages, magical workers and esoteric students do this sort of systematic personal inventory. An excellent aid for this would be my Full Natal Reading or my new Mage's Reading which is my featured reading in this issue of Marginalia. Self knowledge is never wasted! Another way to take "Know Thyself!" is the effort to remain conscious of one's thoughts, feelings and actions, as opposed to acting unconsciously. We tend to think that we are always conscious, but how many times have you started on a walk or a drive and then all of a sudden, realized you were at your destination? These automatic processes just engaged and POW! there you are. This is in fact, happening almost continously. Whenever we react emotionally, when we desire one thing and avert ourselves from another, the process is almost completely automatic. Just being able to sit back and watch the flow of thoughts, sensations and emotions in our mindstream is very useful. In essence, this is meditation and meditation is knowing yourself. On the deepest level, at least in the Buddhist tradition that I am operating in, know thyself, brings the realization that first, there is no individual self, and finally that not only is all One, but even the One is not a self. Know thyself becomes "Know" and then deeper still, we pass out of being able to express in language, which is inherently dualistic, exactly what the experience of this all encompassing unified Consciousness is. Know thyself, therefore, is an incredible potent tool. Engage with it on the level that draws you! Featured Reading: NEW! The Mage's Reading
I've been pleased recently to be getting more and more serious esoteric students and magic users as clients recently and as a result I have created a new natal reading just for them: the Mage's Reading. The Mage's Reading is designed for mages, magic users and esoteric workers, with a focus on the spiritual houses, the 9th, the 3rd and the 12th, to provide insight into your magical path, powers and problems. If you don't need or can't afford the Full Natal Reading, and you are looking to focus on your magical and spiritual life as revealed in your birth chart, then the Mage's Reading is perfect for you. Featured Talisman: Saturn Dragon
Just to make Saturn a bit more appealing, if he likes you and has a good relationship with you, he will give you the minimum suffering necessary for wisdom. Like Ganesha (who is not just the remover of obstacles but the god of obstacles) Saturn guards the gates of Fate and even if you just want to stay in samsara and have an easy life, you want to be on good terms with him. As noted, however, for the wise, he is ultimately your greatest friend. So we have two Saturn talismans, one a +8 Saturn Libra talisman and one a +3 Saturn Dragon talisman. What really worries me is the approach that more is always better and that if you can't get the best, just give up and go home with nothing. Also we are very programmed in our consumer-capitalist society to equate cost with quality, so the more expensive must be better. A good deal of the cost differential between the Saturn Libra and the Saturn Dragon talismans is due to the scarcity of the Saturn Libra. I mean, definitely get the +8 if you can easily afford it, but if you can't, you owe it to yourself to consider the +3. The key here is these are not batteries passively filled with Saturn power, but a nexus for communication with the spirit of Saturn. Ultimately your connection with Saturn is what matters. The +8 is like a super fiber optic T3 connection, the +3 is like calling Saturn on a cell phone. You might get a dropped call occasionally, but you are getting through loud and clear. So for those wanting a planetary talisman and a specific planet to work with for spiritual knowledge and growth, plus wisdom and mastery of magic, astrology and esoteric arts, Saturn is your ticket. If your Saturn is in Capricorn, Aquarius or Libra, Saturn talismans are great for you. Saturn in Cancer, Leo or Aries, a Saturn talisman is probably not the best choice for you. Saturn in any other sign, so long as he is not retrograde or combust, Saturn is fine. For those with afflicted Saturns, or for anyone if you are interested, do Saturn planetary charity. Of all the planets, Saturn may be the most important to do planetary charity for.
