Regular Devotional Invocations

TOP

Inner Circle Marginalia
As I begin to develop and work with the celestial spirits as a spiritual path, I realize more and more that one of the key elements is to make regular invocations of the celestial spirits in a devotional spirit. This is at the other end of the spectrum from what we might call a "magical" approach. Both are valid approaches, but I am increasingly drawn to the devotional approach.
Let's compare these appproaches:

MAGICAL
  • Motivation: looking for particular effect, celestial spirits are useful insofar as they produce effects that I wish.
  • Method: invoke spirits when effect is desired, ask or even demand desired effect, ignore spirits when no effect is desired.
DEVOTIONAL
  • Motivation: seeking relationship with celestial spirits, may also seek specific effects, but this is secondary motivation. Willing to accept no effect or effects other than what is originally desired.
  • Method: regular invocations, do not ask for specific effects or do so politely, invoke spirits even when specific effects is not desired.
As noted it is important not to start making value judgments that the "magical" or "devotional" approaches are bad or that one is better than the other. In my case, despite the fact that the majority of my invocations are devotional, when there is something really significant, an important court case or job opportunity, I will ask the celestial spirits for their assistance and for a specific outcome. What I think, however, is that my getting specific outcomes is enhanced significantly because I have forged a strong, long term relationship with the celestial spirits through repeated invocations that focused on veneration without asking for anything in return.
Inner Circle Marginalia
It's easy to analogize this to human relationships. If someone only shows up when they want something from us and is demanding, we are less likely to accede to their request than the politely worded favor asked of us by a close friend, who rarely asks favors and gives us our favorite food and drink whenever we stop by.
There are other more subtle advantages to the devotional approach. First, the celestial spirits, at least at the level at which I try to interact with them, which is at the archangelic or deva level, are wise and highly developed spiritual beings. Jupiter, for example, is the conduit through which the divine idea of justice manifests in the material and sub-lunary realm. Do I know better what should happen or what effects are best for me or does Jupiter? My general request of Jupiter is for "sufficient sustenance" and I leave it to him as to what that is, as opposed to asking to be a billionaire or win the lottery.
Next the magical approach, in common with how we generally view reality, sees the problem as out there in the world, with other people and things. The solution to my problems is to rearrange the world to suit me. Repeated invocation and contact with the celestial spirits, on the other hand, has an internal transformative effect on us. After all the spirits of the planets and stars, etc. are inside us as well as outside of us. If we desire love, for example, the invocation of Venus can help us to be more loving and more capable of attracting love.
So it is very useful to think more deeply and clearly about our motivations and our overall approach to the celestial spirits. As much I am drawn to a devotional approach, in doing so I am not rejecting a magical approach.

The Daily Planetary Practice page explains how to do daily invocations of the planets on the day they rule and provides free planetary invocations you can use. The key, of course, with invocations of the celestial spirits is that the invocations need to be made at a time that is astrologically appropriate and the more astrologically appropriate the better as a general rule. Normally for a planet we would want: (1) the planet rising or culminating; dignified at least by triplicity, if not exaltation or sign; planetary hour (planetary day is a bonus); and the planet unafflicted.
The Daily Planetary Practice substitutes regularity for pefection of the election. The planets are invoke on their day, but this is done every single day. I've been doing a regular Daily Planetary Practice, interrupted only by trips to Japan, for over 15 years! I do an invocation of the 3rd and 7th Mansions of the Moon, each month when the Moon is in the appropriate Mansion.
An excellent initial resource for the Daily Planetary Practice or beginning devotional planetary invocations or planetary magic is the Planetary Magic Mini-Course. This includes lessons as well as my TPHP, planetary hours software and PMP, planetary magic program software. This also includes hi-resolution color images for all the planets that you can print out for talismans or for your altar. Put the Planetary Magic Mini-Course together with the Daily Planetary Practice and you are all set for devotional planetary invocations.
While the Planetary Magic Mini-Course, like my other courses is available via CD, I now have a new download option which saves considerably on shipping, particularly outside the US (non-US shipping is $35!). The download option doesn't include a copy of Secrets of Planetary Magic but is discounted and there is a link so you can get the book in paperback or in Kindle E-book edition. You can order the Planetary Magic Mini-Course via CD or Download.

So let's talk a little bit about this talisman. First, these are CAZIMI Moon talismans made when the Moon is within 16 minutes, yes minutes not degrees, of the Sun. I can't tell you how hard it is, because the Moon moves so quickly, to make a talisman when she is cazimi, plus you need the Moon dignified. Here she is dignified by sign! Picatrix says that when the Moon is cazimi this is, "better than any other quality of the Moon, and is more powerful than all her other aspects." Picatrix, Bk II, ch. 3. (translation by John Michael Greer). Cazimi increases significantly the dignity the planet already has, so these are, right from the get go, very powerful Moon talismans. Moon is naturally the ruler of safety, travel, growth, psychic and visionary ability. This last is very important for astrologers and other fortunetellers, one the signatures of which is a strong and/or angular Moon in their natal charts. (I have Moon rising!).
A Cazimi Moon also has the very useful quality of invisibility. Since the Moon is blotted out by the Sun when she is so close, this talisman confers the power of invisibility. I sincerely doubt that this is in the Harry Potter cloak of invisibility, techno-magic sense, but more like camouflage, blending in and being unnoticed.

Finally these talismans are also house based talismans for protection and for reconciliation. We note that Scorpio rises and the ruler of the Ascendant Mars, significator of the elector, the user of the talisman, is highly dignified by sign and rising. The Moon conjoins with reception the ruler of the 7th of open enemies and 12th of secret enemies, Venus, who is in the sign of the Moon, while Venus trines Mars, significator of the elector. Mercury ruler of the 10th of government trines Mars. In fact there is not a single malefic aspect in this chart! Highly unusual and highly auspicious for peace and reconciliation, in addition to strength and invisibility. If your enemies or the government even see you at all, they want to be friends!
So for a very short time, until March 14, 2017 and in a limited quantity of 3, the Cazimi Moon talismans, regularly $299.95 plus shipping are $50 off, just $249.95 plus shipping!
