Focusing the Effects of Magic

Inner Circle Marginalia
One of the key practical problems in magic is focusing effects. How do we make sure that our magic gets to the people or things we wish to affect? Our most significant tool is the Hermetic maxim of "As above, so below" which encapsulates the reality that all things are united in the One. But everything is not equally or as strongly connected to everything else, so it is the task of the mage to ferret out these hidden connections, which Agrippa refers to as occult virtues.
Bill Whitcomb, in his Magician's Companion, gives a whole series of axioms in the magical world view. Two are very useful for focusing magic, the law of similarity and the law of contagion. Whitcomb says these are both sublaws of the law of association, section IX, which says that the more two things have in common the more influence they exert on each other. So the law of similarity uses similar forms and actions to connect. Whitcomb gives the example of a ritual to cause rain that uses dripping water. The law of contagion says that things that were in contact remain connected after they are separated. This is sympathetic magic, so that someone's cut hair or toenail clippings are spiritually connected to them, even after being cut off.
We can see the use of these principles in hoodoo and rootwork practice. Rootworkers seeking to affect a person magically might use, in descending order of connection, hair or nail clippings, clothing the person had worn, the person's signature, their picture, or finally their name. Clearly parts of their body had a very close connection to the person under the law of contagion. A person's picture, however, follows the law of similarity, which since the form of the person obviously closely corresponds to their picture. The person's name has a very special magical connection to the person. Whitcomb has a special law for names and notes that magically the name of a person or thing, is the person or thing, obviously a strong magical connection.
Bhen it comes to astrological magic we can see the operation of the law of form very clearly. In the Centiloquium or 100 Aphorisms traditionally attributed to Ptolemy it says, " IX. In their generation and corruption forms are influenced by the celestial forms, of which the framers of talismans consequently avail themselves, by observing the ingresses of the stars thereupon." Thabit Ibn Qurra, the famed Harranian Sabian astrologer, explains how to make a talisman to expel scorpions, by making a talisman in the shape of a scorpion, with the Moon rising in Scorpio. Here we can see the use of the law of form, because the talisman meant to affect a scorpion is in the shape of a scorpion, but we add the astrological magic technique of using the celestial forms, in this case the sign of Scorpio and the key technique of astrological timing, by making the talisman when the Moon rises in Scorpio. This tunes earthly form and earthly timing to celestial form and celestial cycles. By coming into alignment with celestial forms and cycles, earthly things are strongly influenced by celestial powers and spirits and receive their effects.
Thabit Ibn Qurra's De Imaginibus, which is available from Renaissance Astrology Press, explains how to make a variety of talismans, including pest control, protection, destruction and wealth. We can see that these talismans were originally made as small statuettes. Thabit first says to make the statuettes in the image of the person to be affected and to consecrate them using the person's name. De Imaginibus Chapter VII. This follows our axioms of magic as similar forms and the name of a thing cause a connection to the thing itself. Finally, the effect is connected to the chosen person by having it close to the person. For a malefic talisman Thabit recommends burying the talisman in the house or dwelling place of the person to be affected. De Imaginibus Chapter VII.
All of this is pretty standard magical practice in many traditions. What Thabit and astrological magic add are additional ways of focusing the effects of magic. For example, the very root of a house based talisman is picking a house appropriate to the person, thing or effect we wish to cause. For example, a king or person in authority is ruled by the 10th house, a romantic relationship or spouse by the 7th house, etc. In addition one of Thabit's main focusing techniques is to make the talisman with same degree rising for the making of the talisman that was rising for the person's natal chart, their Ascendant degree, in other words. It is also possible to use the same rising sign, but this is less focused.
So we could imagine making a talisman for someone using their picture, writing their name and goal on the picture and then with the appropriate astrological symbols, seals and sigils on the back. We would make the talisman at an appropriately elected time and consecrate it. This is another example of how astrological magic is part of the greater magical tradition, yet still offers some additional methods to increase and focus magical effects.

Folks, I am really looking forward to 2018! We've got a major expansion of available talismans and pentacles underway, for example in December Jupiter pentacles and talismans and Pleiades talismans. February brings Moon pentacles and talismans and Saturn talismans! Our casting schedule is looking like about 2 different talismans or pentacles a month for the rest of the year.
I've also decided to expand access to Renaissance Astrology talismans and pentacles, by putting them back on our main website. Here are currently available talismans and currently available pentacles and currently available magic mirrors. No more username or password necessary, Renaissance Astrology talismans are once again publicly accessible!
Renaissance Astrology talismans are the product of almost twenty years of research and practical application of traditional philosophy, astrology and astrological magic. Actually making the talismans at a properly elected time, one that may not recur for years, or may never recur again, is incredible difficult, but the only way to make authentic traditional astrological talismans. Buying talismans not only allows you access to the amazing spiritual influences of the celestial spirits, but helps support the work of Renaissance Astrology in bringing these arcana to contemporary esoteric seekers.
