I then starting re-reading some material written by Robert Zoller in his natal astrology course where he discusses the almuten figuris which is associated with our particular or individual daemon or guardian angel. Zoller cites the late classical Neo-platonic philosopher Iamblichus who says that you can determine the particular daemon from your natal chart, that the particular daemon can be invoked through a planet as each planet has a host of daemons or spirits associated with it and, "the knowledge of [the particular daemon] liberates us from fate." Zoller goes on to say,
"How can this possibly be? The answer seems to be that the knowledge of the holy Guardian Angel entails a dignification or a raising of the level of spiritual awareness to a point where the individual is not coerced by fate. This is referred to as Natura Completa in the Picatrix, i.e. complete or perfected nature. [Translated as perfect nature in the Greer/Warnock Picatrix] It is the knowledge of the One Thing say the Picatrix, the knowledge of the Self. The One Thing, which is eternal, and it would appear from these combined teachings that the Almutem Figuris representing the peculiar Daemon represents a quality in the Soul, which so dominates us as to be our primary or chief feature. Something that is working behind the scenes in every aspect of our lives, physically, emotionally, spiritually on every possible level."

Zoller makes several additional interesting points. First, that the qualities represented by the almuten figuris need to be given up in order to have spiritual union with the All, so for example, if Mars was your almuten figuris that while conflict and crusading was your worldly strength, that this is limited and therefor an impediment to the spiritual union which is universal. Paradoxically, the almuten figuris also indicates, according to Zoller, our individual pathway for spiritual progress. "It is the beginning point for us. If we have Venus has our Almutem, we are going to arrive at a knowledge of higher things through that Venusian activity."
Finally Zoller says, "The Picatrix-style magician would worship the ruling planet in the horoscope [almuten figuris] on a daily level. This would be a kind of daily practice to achieve familiarity with and knowledge of the Holy Guardian Angel through the daily practice of a ritual. It is intended to identify the consciousness of the astrologer/magician with the being of the peculiar Daemon."
This is extremely interesting for a number of reasons. First, Zoller really got me started with astrological magic, not so much with the technical details and my impression is that he is not really a practitioner of astrological magic, but more with the necessary worldview and philosophical background. Lesson 15 of my Astrological Magic Course includes many of Zoller's initial teachings given privately to me and only available in turn to my students. Secondly, I've had the materials for Zoller's natal course for a long time and while I had read the almuten figuris lesson before, my spiritual progress hadn't been sufficient to grasp what he was getting at. I've also recently been exposed to how western astrology and astrological magic was assimilated into tantric Buddhist practice in China and Japan, so this material on the almuten figuris and the spiritual use of astrology and magic dovetails nicely.
So two points. First, it's certainly valuable as a practical matter to know your almuten figuris. I provide this information in my Full Natal Reading as well as Spiritual Path Reading and Mage's Reading. If you haven't had one of these, they are definitely worthwhile. For astrologer and magicians I definitely recommend the Mage's Reading.
