Things Done in Secrecy:
An Election For Avoiding an Audit

from William Ramesey, Astrologia Restaurata 1653

I have recently been helping a legal client with some tax problems. The client said, "I wish I could get the IRS off my back!" which got me thinking about an election for this very purpose.
Electional astrology deals with the choice of astrologically propitious times to take action and comes from the Latin electio meaning choice. This is the same root as our modern use of the word election in politics.
The 17th century English astrologer William Ramesey in discussing elections for the second house of money (definitely important in a tax question) says,
And if you would borrow money privately that it might not be known or divulged, let the Moon...be under the Sun's beams; and going to Conjunction of the Fortunes when she separates from the Sun, or some other good aspect of the Fortunes no way impedited; this causeth the business to be kept private and close;
Astrologia Restaurata Bk. III, page 135.
This advice for secrecy is general applicable, not just to financial questions. Henry Coley, a student of William Lilly and noted astrologer in his own right, edited Animae Astrologiae which contains selections from the Italian astrologer Jerome Cardan. In it Cardan says, "If you would have anything kept secret let the Moon be under the Sun's beames when you do it." Electional Aphorism 2 (JustUs ed.) page 54.
Lilly says that planets are combust when they are within 12 degrees of the Sun and they are under the Sun's beams when they are between 12 and 15 degrees of the Sun. Being combust is a great affliction and being under the Sun's beams, while not as serious is still an affliction, "...for then [a planet] will be if small efficacy in anything..." says the Italian astrologer Guido Bonatti. Animae Astrologiae 53rd Consideration (JustUs ed.) page 14.
However, we have an interesting exception to this general rule because when planets are close to the Sun while they are diminished in power they are also difficult or impossible to see, due to its brightness. Thus while being under the Sun's beams and going from, rather than to, combustion, a planet is appropriate as the significator of an activity that the elector (person using the election) would like to keep secret. As well, Bonatti says when a planet has gone out from combustion 15 degrees, so that he appears, "...he is more fortified in everything: like one coming out of a battle rejoicing having destroyed and outed all his enemies." Animae Astrologiae 54th Consideration (JustUs ed.) page 14.

In the electional chart the Moon is at 13 degrees and the Sun at 1 degree of Cancer, thus it fulfills our major requirement as the Moon is just under the Sun's beams and going from combustion. The Moon is also quite strong in her sign Cancer and is applying to a sextile with mutual reception by triplicity and exaltation to benefic Venus, strong in her sign Taurus in the benefic 11th house of hopes and dreams. It is also Venus day (Friday) and Venus hour.
As Cancer is rising, the Moon is the ruler of the first house and thus significator of the elector. The Moon is also the ruler of the 2nd house of money and the dispositer of the Part of Fortune.
The ruler of the 10th house of government is Jupiter who is afflicted by being in detriment and in the 12th house. The 7th house of enemies is ruled by Saturn, who is also afflicted by being in the 12th house. The 7th house is further afflicted by the presence of the malefic South Node of the Moon which is conjunct the 7th house cusp.
The only reservations about this election are the fact that the Moon and the Sun are in the ascendant, which we would like to avoid. Also Venus is the almuten of the 7th, but since she is making a good aspect with reception and is a Fortune, we cannot really look too unfavorably on this.
What to do this with election? Well, certainly it would have been a good time to mail in one's tax return, but it's too late for that now. Those wishing to take magical action might usefully peruse Cat Yronwode's Lucky Mojo Curio Company particularly the "Law Keep Away" oil, incense and mojo hand.
Of course, the most effective thing to do is not have any tax situations that you don't mind discussing with the IRS.
