The 36 decan or faces are of great antiquity and I teach their ancient magic in my Decan/Face Mini-Course and and in my full Astrological Magic Course. The ancient Egyptians marked them with sets of fixed stars and used their rising for time keeping in their temples and rituals. The faces were incorporated into the Zodiac by dividing each sign into three faces or decans. Because of the long history of the faces there are many variant sources giving different descriptions of their images, sigils, spirit names, and purposes. 2nd Face Image © Robert Place One key set of variations is the planetary rulership of the faces. In Arabic/Western traditional astrology the first face of Aries, which begins the sequence, is ruled in the Chaldean Order, beginning with Mars, the second face of Aries, by the Sun, the third face of Aries by Venus, the first face of Taurus by Mercury and so on. In the Indian planetary rulership of the decans, known as darijan, the ruler of the first decan of a sign the planet that rules the sign. The next decan is ruled by the ruler of the next sign in the triplicity of the sign. Thus the first decan of Aries is ruled by Mars. Since Aries is a fire sign, the next fire sign is Leo and thus the second decan of Aries is ruled by the Sun. The next fire sign is Sagittarius and thus the third decan of Aries is ruled by Jupiter. Here is a listing of the decan lords under both systems. Interestingly the ruler of the 2nd face of Libra in both systems is Saturn! The most famous of astrological grimoires, the Picatrix says the image of the 2nd face of Libra is, "A dark man having a journey of marriage and joy. And this is a face of quiet, joy, abundance, of the good life." Picatrix Bk II, ch 11, trans. by Christopher Warnock. A slightly different translation appears in our complete Picatrix, "There arises in the second face of Libra, a black man, a bridegroom having a joyous journey. And this is a face of tranquility, joy, abundance and good living. And this is its form." Picatrix, Bk II, ch 11, Greer & Warnock trans (Adocentyn, 2010) at 115. If it happens that the Sun is rising in the hour of the planet or combines its force with it in a way that you desire, the work will be stable and strong." Picatrix, Bk II, chapter 11. Greer & Warnock trans (Adocentyn, 2010) at 117. Therefore using the Picatrix method we elect for face talismans as follows: 1. Place the planetary ruler of the face in the face 2. Make sure that the planet is not afflicted 3. If possible have the Sun rising in the planetary hour of the face ruler, i.e. rising on the day of the ruler. Alternatively have the Sun making a positive applying aspect to the planetary ruler of the face for positive talisman or a negative applying aspect for negative talismans. 4. If you have the Sun rising, make sure the Sun is unafflicted. Saturn, the ruler of the 2nd Face of Libra, is in the 2nd Face of Libra, highly dignified by exaltation and triplicity as well as face. The Sun rises in the planetary hour and day of Saturn. The Sun, Saturn and the Moon are unafflicted.
